Frequently Asked Questions

What is Green Up Day?

Green Up Day is a wonderful and unique Vermont tradition that began in 1970. It is one day every year when residents from each town work together to clean up litter around roadways and common areas.

Green Up Vermont is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the stewardship of our state’s natural landscape and waterways and the livability of our communities by involving people in Green Up Day and raising public awareness about the benefits of a litter-free environment. When is Green Up Day?

Green Up Day is the first Saturday in May, every year. This upcoming Green Up Day is Saturday, May 4th, 2024!

How can I volunteer?

There are many ways to get involved in Green Up Day! Here are some examples:

  • Collecting litter found along roads and/or common areas
  • Bringing collected trash and recycling to Earthwise Transfer Station
  • Helping clean up larger and/or heavier items
  • Sorting and cleaning recyclables in order to divert as much from the landfill as possible
  • Distributing Green Up bags to volunteers
  • Joining a team to help organize future Green Up Day events

We are always looking for more ways to include our neighbors. If you have another suggestion, please let us know!

What if I’m not available on Green Up Day?

Fear not! We usually receive Green Up bags a couple weeks before the event. Bags will be distributed to volunteers as soon as possible to allow you to Green Up whenever works best for you.

Where do I get Green Up bags?

When you sign up to volunteer, you can choose to:

  • Pick up your Green Up bags (contact-free) from your coordinator’s house.
  • Have someone drop them off at your home/business (for Waitsfield & Fayston residents/businesses only & must request at least 2 weeks prior to Green Up Day).
  • Pick up your Green Up bags from the MRV Welcome Center after 8am on Green Up Day.

Where do I pick up litter?

After you sign up to volunteer, you will receive an email indicating which area you will be responsible for. Please avoid going to other areas to collect litter unless it is after Green Up Day.

If you have a preferred area where you would like to Green Up, please include a comment on your sign up form. You can see what locations still need coverage here. We will try our best to accommodate your request but may not always be able to do so. Signing up early gives you the best chance to snag your favorite spot so don’t delay – sign up now!

What do I do with large/heavy items?

For any large and/or heavy items, please contact us and let us know what needs to be picked up and where it is located.

Where do I leave used Green Up bags once I’m finished?

This year, we are asking all volunteers to bring their filled Green Up bags to Earthwise Transfer Station. Bags should be dropped off during normal business hours. Please do not leave Green Up bags at the gate if they have closed for the day.
